Jenny Knob Shelter-Doc’s Knob Shelter. 626.0 done/1563.8 to go. April 22, 2017.

I slept pretty good last night. It rained again overnight. I’m glad I was in the shelter. I was up early as usual. On the trail by 6:00.

The first couple of hours it wasn’t raining and then it let loose. It rained the rest of the day until I got to the shelter about 4:00. My shoes and socks are soaked. My pants are still damp. Now it’s foggy.

There were some great views that I couldn’t see because of the rain and fog. I didn’t get pictures of Dismal Falls because I didn’t want to take my phone out of my pack in the rain.

Like I said yesterday, I would like to get a waterproof case for my iPhone. Now I put it in a ziplock bag and put it inside my pack. Then I put a rain cover on my pack.

I have hiked in the rain everyday this week. Some days it only rained an hour or two and very lightly. Today’s rain was not light.

I have not been wearing my raincoat. It’s too hot when you’re hiking. I prefer to just get wet instead. As long as the gear in my pack doesn’t get wet I don’t care.

There are five of us at the shelter tonight. Engineer and Maple Syrup. Also a young German couple. Laura and Lucas. They just finished college and are doing the AT before they get a job.

It’s supposed to rain for the next three days. I’m looking forward to town food tomorrow. We’re sitting in the shelter tonight talking about food. It’s the one thing that is always on our mind.

I’m also looking forward to no rain next week.

  1. I liked your comment about talking about food. My 3 most important words in food discussions: Quantity, Quantity, Quantity. Got to go to those all you can eat places. Quality and variety were in there somewhere. 👍

  2. I am fascinated by the number of people you are meeting along the way. I pictured the AT to be much more lonely and remote. I think maybe it was when Emma Gatewood was hiking it.
