Dick’s Dome Shelter-Bears Den Hostel. 1003.2 done/1186.6 to go. May 10, 2017

19 miles today. I thought they were going to be easier than they were. I guess I got to used to the easier, more groomed trails in Shenandoah National Park. It got rocky and challenging today.

I passed the 1000 mile mark today. It’s really hard to believe I’ve gone that far already.

The highlight today is the hostel we are staying in. It is owned and operated by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the nonprofit organization that oversees the AT.

It looks a little like a castle. There is several pictures below. There are 35 bunks in this house. For $20 you get a bunk, shower, pancakes for breakfast and laundry. For a $10 upgrade you can add on a pizza, soda and pint of Ben&Jerrys ice cream. That’s what I did.

Tomorrow I go through Harpers Ferry. That’s where the Appalachian Trail Conservancy headquarters is. I’ll stop and get my picture taken, buy some supplies and move on.

Engineer and Timber are here. Maple Syrup is back on the trail and moving fast trying to catch up.

  1. The top 2 pictures look exactly as if you had stood here
on the Central Coast and taken them of the Pacific Ocean at sunset.

  2. Ok, so no Maryland challenge. You should now be thinking about the half gallon challenge. At the half way point one eats a half gallon of ice cream in one sitting and gets that coveted spoon award. I’m thinking vanilla ice cream.
