Lake of the Clouds Hut-Madison Spring Hut. 1862.6 done/327.2 to go. 85.05% done. July 2, 2017.

Very low mileage day today. Only 7.2 miles. I’m very unhappy about that. I was wanting to do a minimum of ten and was hoping for fifteen.

To start off with I got out late this morning. My work for stay chore was changing bedding on the bunks. There were five of us to do 92 bunks and we couldn’t start until after the guests ate breakfast and got out of their rooms. I didn’t get out of there until 10:00.

Then the trail was very rocky and the high winds on the mountains made it hard to keep your balance.

First thing was the climb up Mt Washington.

The sustained winds were 45 mph with gusts up to 65mph. I never got a view because I was in the clouds. At the summit it was almost impossible to stand without being blown around.

On the way down from Mt Washington the clouds began to clear.

I then climbed Mt Clay, Mt Jefferson, and Mt Adams.

I got to this hut at 5:30. It was to late to go on to the next campground so I’m staying here and doing work for stay again. I checked before agreeing because I didn’t want to leave late again tomorrow morning. My chore will be an evening chore.

Besides sleeping inside, one of big benifits is getting to eat the leftovers after the guests eat. It’s really good food.

The sunset here was great.

Tomorrow I’ll be climbing the last of  The Presidentials. Mt Madison. I’ve been hearing the 3000 foot descent is very challenging. I’m certainly planning on going farther tomorrow.

  1. Take what the trail gives you. You are doing fine going thru the Whites. Work for stay at the huts can both be a pain and a life saver. You seem to have found the right balance.
